Qualifications
In 2006 the Board of Director's of the North Carolina Psychoanalytic Society explored ways to expand membership rights while retaining the rich history, level of expertise and training that is expected of a member of the Society. The following are the Member Categories and qualifications are now inplace.

Categories of Membership with Qualifications

Active membership in the North Carolina Psychoanalytic Society may be extended to those individuals who qualify under the following five categories:
  • Psychoanalyst Member: Clinical graduates of any institute of training approved by the American Psychoanalytic Association or the International Psychoanalytic Association.
  • Clinical Associate Member: Clinical students matriculated in the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas.
  • Academic or Research Associate: non-clinical, academic or research graduates from a psychoanalytic or psychoanalytic psychotherapy training institute as well as to other academics who have demonstrated a sustained interest in psychoanalysis and who satisfy requirements of good character and professional fitness.
  • Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist Member: Clinicians who, by virtue of psychoanalytically oriented training, experience, and interest, have demonstrated a devotion to psychoanalysis.
  • Commuting Member: Members who both live and work outside of the following North Carolina counties: Wake, Durham, Chatham, Granville and Orange. Commuting members have a vote and moderated dues.
Additional Designations for Active Members
  • Charter Member: All those who were active members of the Society on April 30, 1977, when it was accepted as an affiliate Society of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
  • Life Members: Extended upon request to members 72 years of age or older or who have completed 40 years as a member of the Society.
Other Membership Categories
  • Affiliate Member: Individuals who have demonstrated an interest in psychoanalysis as evidenced by having been enrolled in psychoanalytic courses, lecture series, or study groups; or having undergone a personal psychoanalysis or twice-weekly psychotherapy; or having made use of psychoanalytically informed supervision. They do not have the right to vote or to hold office.
  • Corresponding Member: Members who formerly qualified as Active Members of the North Carolina Society but who now live outside of North or South Carolina. They do not have the right to vote or to hold office.
  • Honorary Member: Individuals whose outstanding contributions to the advancement of psychoanalysis have been so recognized by the voting members of the NCPS. They enjoy all the rights and privileges of active membership.
  • Student Member: Matriculated students in an institution of higher learning who do not otherwise qualify for membership and who are in good standing in that institution. They do not have the right to vote or to hold office.
